Erik Thorbecke is a Graduate School Professor and H.E. Babcock Professor of Economics, Emeritus at Cornell University. He had previously been the Chairman of the Economics Department and Director of the Program on Comparative Development at Cornell. His research interests focus on international development and international economics. He has done extensive work on poverty and the Foster-Greer-Thorbecke class of poverty measures have become the standard tool used in empirical studies. His present research projects include the relationship between growth and poverty within the context of Sub-Saharan Africa and the impact of globalization on the world's poor.
