Developing country economies have grown faster than those of the developed countries. In particular, the emergence of China, India, Brazil, and South Africa (CIBS) is reshaping the global economic and political landscape. The prospects and implications of the rise of CIBS are of profound importance to national governments, business communities, and international governance.

The third conference of the UNU-WIDER project on ‘Southern Engines of Global Growth’ will focus upon empirical and conceptual studies exploring the roles of capital flows in its various forms—portfolio investment, foreign direct investment, and banking activities—in these four countries. The conference will also explore the contributions of capital flows to the growth of the CIBS and other nations. Intra- and inter-regional issues relating to capital flows are also welcome.

This conference is organized in collaboration with the Institute for Applied Economics Research (IPEA-Brazil).
