FEATURE ARTICLES

From the Editor's desk
T
ony Addison
So with winter almost upon us, it is a good time to take stock. In this month’s Angle, we return to global trade governance, with Part 2 of Alisa DiCaprio’s article. Lucy Scott focuses on Bangladesh’s achievements and challenges. Lucy and I also pick out some messages for the high-level aid meeting takeing place in Busan, South Korea. And I reflect further on the currency wars, after my first piece on this topic in last month’s Angle . Readers will see me repeatedly returning to currencies in 2012 as there is no shortage of excitement, especially in the eurozone. Full article.

Tony Addison and Lucy Scott

UPCOMING EVENTS

Aerial view over South Darfur, Sudan (2007). South Darfur, Sudan. UN Photo/Fred Noy. To meet development objectives, aid recipients and their donor partners need to effectively manage the macro-economic effects of aid. Aid can improve the economy's supply-side and raise growth. But if the macroeconomic impact of aid is not managed well, it can distort and undermine growth. This event will clarify aid's macroeconomic effects. This knowledge will contribute to improving aid's growth impact and help with the scaling up of aid itself. UNU-WIDER gratefully acknowledges the financial contributions towards the ‘Foreign Aid: Research and Communications (ReCom)’ programme by the governments of Denmark (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) and Sweden (Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency) and the continued support of UNU-WIDER’s research programme by the governments of Finland (Ministry for Foreign Affairs), and the United Kingdom (Department for International Development).
