2023 SOUTHMOD workshop

5 September 2023, Oslo, Norway and online

2023 SOUTHMOD workshop

On 5 September 2023, participants from six different time zones gather for a hybrid SOUTHMOD workshop to exchange experiences and knowledge on tax-benefit microsimulation modeling in developing countries. This is the first in-person SOUTHMOD workshop organised since 2019, with a possibility to join online.

The in-person part is organised in Oslo, Norway, back-to-back with the WIDER Development Conference on domestic revenue mobilization.

The annual workshop brings together representatives from 13 SOUTHMOD model countries in Africa, Latin America and Asia, as well as the partners based at the SASPRILondon School of Economics and Political Science, the EUROMOD group at JRC, and the SOUTHMOD team at UNU-WIDER.

The SOUTHMOD workshop allows the participants to exchange experiences and knowledge on tax-benefit microsimulation modeling in a developing country context. The focus of this year’s workshop is to dig into recent research making use of the models, share insights about past policy retreats, showcase the four new models (Rwanda, Bolivia, Colombia, Peru), and introduce the first version of the SOUTHMOD model bundle.

About SOUTHMOD

The workshop is part of the UNU-WIDER project SOUTHMOD - simulating tax and benefit policies for development. Tax-benefit microsimulation models provide knowledge for better policy-making and inclusive development. With the models the effects of different policy scenarios on poverty, inequality, and government revenues can be analysed and compared.

SOUTHMOD project is part of UNU-WIDER's research and capacity development programme on domestic revenue mobilization (DRM), funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Co-operation (Norad).
