The Analysing Poverty workshop was held in Maputo, 6-10 July 2015. The workshop is part of the UNU-WIDER Research Programme theme of Transfromation, in co-operation with Ministry of Economics and Finance of Mozambique, the University Eduardo Mondlane, the University of Copenhagen, and UNICEF.
The workshop hosted a group of post-graduates, government officials and representatives of international organizations for an advanced course in analytical theory and methodology as part of UNU-WIDER’s capacity development work. The UNU-WIDER team, Finn Tarp, Director of UNU-WIDER, Channing Arndt, Senior Research Fellow, and Tulio Cravo, Research Fellow, took the diverse group of participants through the theory of multi-dimensional of poverty, stressing the range of issues, from security poverty to poverty of opportunity, building to a practical lab-based focus on direct analysis, and statistical parsing.
Bringing together perspectives and experience from across the often rigid lines of northern and southern academia, development work, government offices, and international organizations, and carrying out a coherent and cohesive effort represents a continuing success for UNU-WIDER and its partners and collaborators. Work will go on in Mozambique as part of the UNU-WIDER project ‘Inclusive Growth in Mozambique - Scaling-up Research and Capacity’.
