The Future of Multilateralism in Development


The seminar, organized by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland on 24 March 2017 in Helsinki, reflected on the current outlook for multilateralism in the field of development, considering current challenges such as the new US administration.

At the seminar, Non-resident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution Johannes Linn explored the future of multilateral development institutions and approaches, including the UN agencies, the International Financial Institutions, Regional Development Banks, 'vertical funds' and other global fora, such as the G20 Summit. The presentation was followed by comments by President Tarja Halonen and UNU-WIDER Director Finn Tarp.

In his presentation, Professor Tarp helped motivate the debate by giving a critical overview of the World Bank in the success of multilateralism. Tarp also shared recommendations from the Stockholm Statement and UNU-WIDER research evidence, specially the findings published within the ReCom project.
