Tax and benefit responses to COVID-19 in South Africa

SOUTHMOD presented at an SA-TIED Policy dialogue event

UNU-WIDER's SA-TIED programme organized an online policy dialogue event on 19 April. The topic of the event was 'Tax and benefit responses to COVID-19 in South Africa'. The event introduced research results of studies using the SOUTHMOD tax-benefit microsimulation tools.

This first SA-TIED policy dialogue event was hosted under the work stream Public revenue mobilization for inclusive development, and discussed issues surrounding South Africa’s tax and benefit responses to the coronavirus pandemic.

The event aimed to answer the questions on whether COVID-19 related tax and benefit policies in South Africa served their stated goals in terms of providing support to firms and households, and how the tax and benefit system should now be reformed to both provide adequate revenues to lower the deficit and provide an equitable distribution of incomes.

The speakers of the event included UNU-WIDER Non-Resident Senior Research Fellow Jukka Pirttilä, Chief Director of Economic Tax Analysis at National Treasury of South Africa Christopher Axelson, Senior official of South African Revenue Service (SARS) Mamiky Leolo, and Research Director of Southern African Social Policy Research Insights (SASPRI) Dr Gemma Wright.
