Maureen Were

Research Fellow

Maureen Were has a PhD in economics, and over the years has accumulated extensive research experience in economic policy, monetary policy, economic growth, macroeconomic modelling, trade, and gender analysis.

She has published in various refereed journals, such as Economic Modelling, Journal of African Economies, and Review of Development Finance.

She currently serves as the focal point for UNU-WIDER’s collaborative research project Sustainable development solutions for Tanzania – strengthening research to achieve SDGs. She has worked at the Central Bank of Kenya, the Kenya Institute for Public Policy Research and Analysis, and taught at Egerton University and the Kenya School of Monetary Studies.

In 2013 she won a one-year Mo Ibrahim Leadership Fellowship award at the World Trade Organization in Geneva.
