Finn Tarp gives closing remarks at Mozambique Grand Mozefo Forum 2015 – ‘peace and development are two sides of the same coin, and the struggle against poverty must continue’


On 4 December 2015 our director Finn Tarp spoke at the 1st Grand Mozefo Forum 2015 under the heading ’The future is now. Humanizing growth’. The event, which took place in Maputo Mozambique, was aimed at contributing to accelerating growth, inclusion and sustainability in the country by providing a platform for key development actors to interact.

Speaking during the event, Tarp, argued that tackling poverty should be Mozambique’s top priority, suggesting that peace and development are two sides of the same coin.

Tarp pointed to agricultural development as the key for the country to tackle poverty. This would require broad based investment, including in seeds and infrastructure, as well as education and health care. He also highlighted the importance of data, stating that in order to be able to craft the right kind of economic policies we must have the data necessary to make comparisons of developments over time.

The three day event was attended key policy makers such as H.E. Adriano Maleiane, Minister of Economy and Finances of Mozambique, H.E. Ernesto Max Tonela – Minister of Industry and Commerce of Mozambique and H.E: Rogério Manuel – President of the Confederation of Economic Associations of Mozambique CTA, who also spoke at the event, as well as by members of the public and private sectors, and representatives from civil society.

The local United Nations radio channel Rádio ONU Maputo interviewed Tarp during the event. The interview is in Portuguese.
