Rugazia Nyombi on rural economy diversification and its effects on food security

Rugazia Nyombi will present at the WIDER Seminar Series on 6 November.

Abstract - Rural economy Diversification and Its Effects on Food Security of Households in Tanzania

Agriculture has for long dominated Tanzania’s rural economic setup with household’s participation mostly being done to cater for needs of household consumption and surplus attained used for commercial purposes.

An existing challenge affecting Tanzanian Rural areas is the persisting food insecurity experienced by households despite being the major food crop production zone. Factors attributing to food insecurity are associated with low productivity and lack of enough income to purchase enough food.

Hence given diversification attempts by household into off-farm activities, it is the interest of this study to determine the effects of rural household’s diversification attempts to employment activities or informal enterprises on household’s food security.

Findings from the study will shed light on rate of diversification attempts in rural areas, highlight policy recommendations on how better positive outcomes from diversification can help in further ensuring food security.
