Parallel session
Employment, inequality and poverty impacts in South East Asia

This panel discusses the impacts of the pandemic in South East Asia with 3 research papers covering Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines.

The pandemic has had differential impacts – in mortality and morbidity – but also in terms of the impact of lockdowns and disruption in terms of employment and income losses and changes in income and gender inequality and poverty.

The panel asks a set of questions across the cases: What were the social impacts of the pandemic? Which groups were hit harder and why? Why did impacts differ between countries? What did governments do to mediate the social impacts? Looking ahead, how should governments manage the possible trade-offs between pandemic management and economic activity?
