Feeding China

The Experience Since 1949

China's approach to feeding its 22 per cent of the world population has varied considerably during the 36 years of the People's Republic, and so have the results. In the late 1970s its leadership began repudiating much of the country's earlier experience. While food policy since 1978 has moved along new paths, there are nevertheless close links between recent accomplishments and the earlier record. The purpose of this paper is to survey the experience of food policy under the People's Republic in a comprehensive manner and in historical context.
