This session includes papers that extend the World Income Inequality Database (WIID) to study various important topics. WIID is used to study relationship between inequality and human capital, natural disasters, international migration and trust in institutions.

Carlos ​Gradín | Chair

Carlos is a Research Fellow at the United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER). He is on leave of absence from his previous appointment as professor of applied economics at the University of Vigo. Carlos holds a PhD in economics from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. His main research interest is the study of poverty, inequality and discrimination in both developed and developing countries. He is especially interested in those inequalities that occur between population groups (i.e. by gender, race, or ethnicity). His research deals with enhancing the empirical evidence as well as methodological tools for the measurement and understanding of those issues.

Jayash Paudel | Presenter

Natural disasters and economic inequality: Insights from wildfires across the globe

Jayash Paudel joined the University of Oklahoma as an Assistant Professor of Economics in August 2022. Previously, he worked as an Assistant Professor of Economics at Boise State University from 2019 to 2022. His research has appeared in journals including the American Journal of Agricultural Economics, Social Science & Medicine, Land Economics, Energy Economics, Journal of Comparative Economics and World Development.

Vito Peragine | Presenter

Exploring the links between international migration and global inequality

Vito Peragine is Full Professor of Economics and Head of the Department of Economics at the University of Bari. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of York (U.K.). Previously he was Lecturer in Economics at the University "Carlos III" of Madrid. He has published widely in the fields of inequality, poverty and normative economics. He serves on the editorial boards of The Journal of Economic Inequality an The Review of Income and Wealth.

Trust in institutions and the profile of inequality: a worldwide perspective

Flaviana Palmisano is Associate Professor of Public Economics at the University of Rome "La Sapienza" since 2020. In 2022, she got the National Qualification for Full Professorship in Public Economics. She is a General Secretary of the Society for the Study of Economic Inequality (ECINEQ), member of the editorial board of the Review of Income and Wealth, and External Research Fellow for the International Inequalities Institute at the London School of Economics. She holds an MSc in Economics at the University of Edinburgh, a PhD in Economics at the University of Bari, and a Marie-Curie Postdoc fellowship at the University of Luxembourg. Her research interests are in the field of the Economics of Inequality. Most of her work focuses on the measurement of distributional aspects. She is also interested in social capital, tax evasion and informal economy.

Verónica Amarante is Professor at Instituto de Economía, Universidad de la República (Udelar). Prior appointment: ECLAC, United Nations. Holds a PhD in Economics from Sussex University and a MSc in Economics from Universitat Pompeu Fabra. Economist from Universidad de la República (Udelar). Research interests: development, labor market, gender.
