UNU-WIDER and City of Helsinki joint Sustainable Cities Discussion Forum

Hundreds of countries and cities the world over have committed to achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by the year 2030, but have they made any progress?

The City of Helsinki and UNU-WIDER have teamed up to host an inspirational series of discussion forums that will highlight some of the goals and work that is being done to make these goals a reality.

31 May, 2022 | SDG 8: Decent work and economic growth

In the first event of the Sustainable Cities Discussion forum series, Harvard Kennedy School Professor Martha Chen shines a light on the role of informal work in our transforming economy. A panel featuring Dr. Chen, the Mayor of Helsinki Juhana Vartiainen, Emeritus Professor Jo Beall, and community coordinator Mohamed Ghonam discuss what is being done to secure sustainable economic growth and decent work for everyone.

26–27 October, 2022 | SDG 4: Quality education | Special collaboration with HundrED

What kinds of risk-taking and creative innovations are needed to address the persistent gaps in educational outcomes, including the skills gap, achievement gap, gender gap, equity gap, and the digital divide? This two-day event is hosted in collaboration with HundrED Innovation Summit, which brings together education experts from around the world, including representatives from some of the biggest organizations in the field, to talk about the future of education. The speakers include Research Director Lant Pritchett, UNU-WIDER Director Kunal Sen, Mayor of Helsinki Juhana Vartiainen, and many others.

26 May, 2023 | SDG13: Climate action | Special collaboration with Sustainability science days conference

Hosted by the City of Helsinki and UNU-WIDER, this event is organised in collaboration with Sustainability Science Days, an international conference organised jointly by Aalto University and the University of Helsinki’s Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science (HELSUS).
Speakers include leading climate resilience researcher Aditya Bahadur and many other top experts in the climate action field on the local, national and global level. UNU-WIDER Director Kunal Sen and Mayor of Helsinki Juhana Vartiainen will co-host the event.
