Building synergy and coherence in the implementation of the Istanbul Programme of Action in the context of the 2030 Development Agenda

UNU-WIDER Director Finn Tarp will participate as a panelist in a one-day special thematic event titled 'Building synergy and coherence in the implementation of the Istanbul Programme of Action in the context of the 2030 Development Agenda' at the UN Headquarters in New York, on 11 February 2016. The event is organized under the United Nations General Assembly, bringing together United Nations Member States, non-governmental organizations, civil society, the private sector and academic institutions, in order to provide input to Istanbul Programme of Action's (IPoA) comprehensive high-level midterm review.

At the event, Finn Tarp will participate in a panel discussion presenting UNU-WIDER's research on development economics and the findings from recent research projects. Development economics research has a crucial role in providing reliable information, that supports policy decisons towards growth, jobs, improved livelihoods, poverty reduction, and reduced inequality.

The IPoA charts out the international community’s vision and strategy for the sustainable development of Least Developed Countries (LDCs) for the 2011-2020 with a strong focus on developing their productive capacities and supporting the countries to graduate from the status of LDCs. The event builds common ground on how the implementation of the IPoA can be enhanced during the remainder of the decade by building synergies and coherence in the implementation of the IPoA and the 2030 Agenda. During the event partcipants discuss how to strengthen global partnerships for sustainable development, with a view to ensuring the attainment of IPoA's ambitious objectives.

The concept and background note, as well as more information about the event and programme, can be found on the UN General Assembly's website.
