Improved compliance and a renewed social contract for the SDGs

UNU-WIDER, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Tanzania Revenue Authority organise a Tax policy dialogue on tax and fiscal policies on 10 November 2023 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The objectives of the policy seminar are to:

  • Discuss the importance of taxation for sustainable development, identify the challenges with the existing systems, and explore ideas for the way forward in reshaping the global tax architecture.
  • Foster collaboration and cooperation to promote knowledge exchange and information sharing among stakeholders, including tax administrations, finance ministries, parliaments, civil society organizations, development partners, the private sector, and journalists.
  • Bring the perspectives and evidence from the discussions at the country level to the global level.

Three studies and topics are discussed during the event: estimations of the VAT gap in Tanzania, effects of a door to door campaign and risk based tax examinations. In addition to the research presentations the event will feature two panel discussions on importance of taxation and how to reshape the current tax architecture.

This event is part of the collaboration under the Building up efficient and fair tax systems – lessons based on administrative tax data project, which is part of UNU-WIDER's research and capacity development programme on domestic revenue mobilization (DRM), funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Co-operation (Norad).
