SOUTHMOD presented at Tampere University


The Global Health and Social Policy research unit of Tampere university organized an in person The Futures of Global Social Policy Workshop on 30 May 2022. UNU-WIDER Research Associate Jesse Lastunen and Research Assistant Enrico Nichelatti presented on the workshop.

The workshop brought together researchers from different institutions, such as Tampere University, Cambridge University and Universidad Austral de Chile, to discuss social policies from low- and middle-income countries' perspective and at global level.

The title of Jesse Lastunen's presentation was The mitigating role of tax and benefit rescue packages for poverty and inequality in Africa amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Enrico Nichelatti presented together with professor Heikki Hiilamo. The title of their presentation was The social contract in sub-Saharan African: Looking for opportunities to strengthen trust in government and tax compliance by analyzing citizen perception of social and tax systems.

These presentations were part of the SOUTHMOD - simulating tax and benefit policies for development project. The SOUTHMOD project is part of UNU-WIDER's research and capacity development programme on domestic revenue mobilization (DRM), funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Co-operation (Norad).
