SOUTHMOD research presented at the International Association for Research in Income and Wealth conference


The International Association for Research in Income and Wealth (IARIW),  in collaboration with the Tanzania National Bureau of Statistics (TNBS), organizes a conference on Measuring Income, Wealth and Well-being in Sub-Saharan Africa on 11-13 November 2022. The conference is organized in Arusha, Tanzania. UNU-WIDER Research Associate Jesse Lastunen presents at the conference on 12 November.

The objective of this special IARIW-TNBS conference will be to advance our understanding of issues related to measuring national accounts, prices, productivity, income and wealth distribution, poverty, and economic well-being in the countries of Africa through an examination of past experiences related to the measurement of trends in these variables and the identification of future measurement challenges.

The conference is attended by leading economists and tax professionals working the measurement and practice of productivity, income and wealth distribution, poverty, and economic well-being in African countries.

In the conference Jesse Lastunen presents microsimulation-based research on COVID-19 undertaken by the SOUTHMOD group at UNU-WIDER in collaboration with SASPRI and the University of Essex. His presentation is titled The mitigating role of tax and benefit rescue packages for poverty and inequality in Africa amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

SOUTHMOD project is part of UNU-WIDER's research and capacity development programme on domestic revenue mobilization (DRM), funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Co-operation (Norad).
