Key Finnish economics journal highlights UNU-WIDER’s work in its theme issue on development economics

The Finnish language open access journal Kansantalouden aikakauskirja (KAK), published by the Finnish Economic Association, today published its first issue of the year, which highlights a theme less studied in the Nordic country — development economics.

Finn Tarp
UNU-WIDER Director Finn Tarp being interviewed at the Migration and mobility – new frontiers for research and policy conference, 5 October 2017.

The issue includes an in-depth interview with UNU-WIDER Director Finn Tarp. The interview delves into Tarp’s motivations in choosing development economics as his area of work, his experience living in Africa and Asia, the career path that led him to become director, as well as his views on the Institute’s main contributions and innovations in development economics in the last 10 years.

In his editorial, Antti Suvanto, the journal’s editor, highlights the low number of researchers working on issues related to development economics in Finland, and the possibilities created for boosting this field of economics by the fact that UNU-WIDER operates from Helsinki.

UNU-WIDER Senior Non-Resident Research Fellow Jukka Pirttilä also contributes an article to this issue of KAK, which discusses the imperative of developing domestic revenue streams in countries struggling to develop their economies.
